Focus Week ULT Lab Amsterdam: from idea to impact in the heart of Amsterdam North

The highlight?

Last week, the Urban Leisure & Tourism Lab Amsterdam was fully dedicated to experimenting, making and connecting. During the Focus Week, our students worked intensively on concepts that contribute to a liveable, inclusive and future-proof Amsterdam North.

From inspiring expert sessions in the Modestraat to hands-on prototyping with cardboard, ideas were made tangible and immediately tested in real-life contexts.

The Prototype Fair at the HEMA-plein.
Here, students engaged with residents, entrepreneurs and visitors of Buikslotermeerplein — the beating heart of the neighbourhood. Concepts were not only presented, but refined through real feedback from the community.

What this week shows:
👉 Learning doesn’t only happen in the classroom, but in the city itself
👉 Students work on real challenges, with real people
👉 Small interventions can create meaningful impact

As a city lab, we collaborate with residents, partners and students to shape the future of the city. Not by working on the neighbourhood, but with it — through co-creation and shared ownership.
