A Regenerative Digital Visitor Experience for Buikslotermeerplein
Graduation research by Casey Lee Lanada

Buikslotermeerplein is transforming from a traditional shopping area into a new urban heart of Amsterdam-Noord. But how can we ensure that this transformation not only communicates future plans, but also keeps the stories, experiences and identity of the existing community visible?

In her graduation research, Casey Lee Lanada explored how a digital visitor experience could support more inclusive and regenerative development of Buikslotermeerplein. The research puts the perspectives of residents, entrepreneurs and visitors at the centre and examines how digital media can strengthen connection, recognition and engagement with a place undergoing change.

The research resulted in the Immersive Time Experience: an accessible audiovisual installation that lets visitors experience Buikslotermeerplein through three layers of time: past, present and possible futures. Historical images, contemporary community stories and different visions of the future come together to tell the story of a place that is continuously evolving. No phone, app or digital skills are required, making the experience accessible to a broad audience.

The prototype was tested with residents, visitors, students, experts and other stakeholders. The findings indicate that the experience can help people see Buikslotermeerplein from a different perspective, discover stories they did not know before and develop a stronger connection with the area. The concept therefore goes beyond providing information: it creates a way to make local voices visible and collectively imagine the future of the Heart of North. Watch video
